Background of the study
Social stratification refers to the hierarchical organization of society that influences access to resources and opportunities. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, this stratification affects business opportunities by creating disparities in access to capital, networks, and market information (Udo, 2023). Higher social strata often benefit from established connections and preferential treatment, while marginalized groups face significant barriers that hinder entrepreneurial success (Ibrahim, 2024). This uneven distribution of opportunities contributes to persistent economic inequality and stifles local economic growth. Recent research emphasizes that addressing social stratification can lead to a more inclusive business environment, thereby promoting equitable economic development (Nnadi, 2025). The study explores the multifaceted impact of social hierarchies on business opportunities and seeks to identify interventions to level the economic playing field.
Statement of the problem
Social stratification in Ikpoba-Okha creates significant disparities in business opportunities. The unequal access to capital, networks, and market information restricts entrepreneurial activities among lower socio-economic groups. This persistent inequality hinders economic growth and perpetuates social exclusion, necessitating an in-depth examination of the underlying factors and potential remedial measures (Udo, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To analyze the impact of social stratification on business opportunities.
To identify barriers faced by marginalized groups.
To propose strategies for promoting inclusive economic growth.
Research questions:
How does social stratification affect access to business opportunities?
What barriers do lower socio-economic groups face?
What interventions can promote inclusivity in business opportunities?
Research Hypotheses:
Social stratification significantly limits business opportunities for lower strata.
Marginalized groups face greater challenges in accessing capital.
Inclusive policies can mitigate the effects of social stratification.
Significance of the study
The study provides insights into how social hierarchies affect economic opportunities and offers recommendations for creating a more inclusive business environment. The findings will help policymakers design interventions to reduce inequality and foster equitable economic development in Ikpoba-Okha.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the influence of social stratification on business opportunities in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
Definitions of terms:
Social Stratification: The hierarchical arrangement of individuals in society.
Business Opportunities: Prospects for initiating or expanding commercial ventures.
Economic Inclusion: Equal access to economic resources and opportunities.
